Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight in Denken, denken, denken we start from the following question: what goes on in young unemployed people, and how do they live?
For viewers who have never watched this programme: this is a programme that analyses marginal phenomena in society and tries to approach them objectively.
Tonight we have invited three people to the studio. Hendrik-Jan Vleuten. He is a research associate at the University of Amsterdam and works on research into deviant behaviour in socially disadvantaged groups. Hendrik-Jan, what exactly is deviant behaviour?
That is hard to say. It is hard to put briefly and simply, but I will still try to give a definition. Deviant behaviour is behaviour that departs from the prevailing norms. Norms that have reached a certain common consensus in society.
My research population consists of people who are relatively poorly integrated into society. In my research I try to establish a link between being socially disadvantaged and deviant behaviour.
Dat is duidelijk. Dit is Hans Blok.
That is clear. This is Hans Blok.
Inderdaad.
Indeed.
I heard you were working on an extremely interesting project. Can you tell us something about it?
Two years ago the municipality gave us a room to use. Now we are trying to involve the people of the city sector in the neighbourhood council.
We also have Dr John Pusher in the studio. He is a writer and philosopher and has come over from England especially for this. He has written a book about the slums of Birmingham.
John, welcome in the studio. I hope you have had a nice flight. In your last book, “How Paradise Was Lost”, you use the term punk rise. Can you explain it to us?
Yes. It's a little word game that I made up myself. To cut it short: where crisis rises, punk rises. So I came to the philosophical conclusion and termed it: puncrises.
For viewers who don't know English: in his book John tries to show that where crises arise, punk arises, and the other way round. Perhaps Hendrik-Jan can comment briefly on this.
We also find this phenomenon here on the Continent. It mainly concerns young people growing up in a time of pessimism, a time of a certain defeatism. To give a few examples: the growing threat of a nuclear war, of nuclear explosions and so on.
On the one hand society becomes more complex, but on the other hand that same society also becomes rigid. That raises a certain question for these boys: where is this going?
One more thing. If we look at the last decades, we can distinguish two kinds of revolt. First, an optimistic revolt, as I would call it. Then we go back to May 1968. What drove people then was above all the urge for renewal, reform and democratisation.
Punk in één woord.
But the revolt taking place now is more a revolt that no longer offers a way out. It is passive, destructive, pessimistic.
Punk is made up of P for provocative, U for ultra-extreme, N for nihilism and K for cultural pessimism (in Dutch, “cultuurpessimisme”).
Jef Peeters. Jef, jij gaat iets over jezelf vertellen.
We have invited a typical representative of this punk movement to the studio today. Jef Peeters. Jef, you are going to tell us something about yourself.
I thought I was allowed to bring a few slides and thought that would be enough.
For now we can at any rate have a look at those slides. Perhaps you can say something about them too.
I am Jef Peeters. I am 21 years old. When I was 16 I once worked for a few weeks in a tin-can factory, but since then I have been on the dole and that suits me fine.
That is my father's car, which I drive to the dole office every morning.
What strikes me most about these slides is the cold character they give off. They express a certain lovelessness, I would almost say. I also see a very strong comparison with slum culture as it existed in the crisis years before the Second World War.
Your father, Jef, could tell us a thing or two about that, I think. What does your father do at the moment?
At the moment he works in the docks, I think, but I only see him once every two months.
Would you say that you feel involved in what is happening in society? That you think the world should stay as it is, or that it should soon change in a particular direction?
I think it's all rubbish, but I'm enjoying myself just fine.
Je bent niet opstandig. Je zou jezelf geen revolutionair willen noemen.
You are not rebellious. You wouldn't want to call yourself a revolutionary.
We cannot speak here of a revolt in the manner of Marcuse.
Wacht even. Laten we het vanuit de praktijk bekijken. Jef, je staat om 10 of 11 uur op. Wat doe je daarna?
Wait a moment. Let's look at it from practice. Jef, you get up at 10 or 11 o'clock. What do you do after that?
Before 12 o'clock I have to sign on for the dole. Then I go drinking and spend the rest of the day being a punk.
Do you prefer The Stranglers or the Sex Pistols?
I'd rather not talk about that.
It is clear that this music plays an important role in the lives of these young people. Perhaps we can now listen to some punk music.
[Song: Ian Dury, “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”]
Doctor John Pusher.
Doctor John Pusher. You can probably tell us more about the link between music and culture.
John, in your book “From Woodstock to Punk Rock”, you gave a splendid analysis of the evolution of music.
Yes, there has been indeed an interesting evolution since the end of the sixties, the big difference being between commercial music and non-commercial music. The commercial music was for the lower classes and the non-commercial music was for the higher classes and so-called intellectuals. Non-commercial music stood for avant-garde.
Now we see that the reverse has happened and that the avant-garde music and culture is coming from the lower classes. It being anti-commercial, unaesthetic, unintellectual, spontaneous form of anti-musical music. Punk music is a monotonous reflection of everyday life without any hope.
What John is saying is that punk music is the avant-garde music of the working class. Monotonous and hopeless.
Inderdaad.
Indeed. We see the monotony again in those endless new housing estates in our modern cities. With their straight rows of houses, blocks of flats, straight flowerbeds, straight roads. That explains a great deal about that music.
Jef, how are things with you in terms of personal contact? If I may ask.
Misschien kunnen we een dia opzetten.
Perhaps we can put up a slide.
I am very sorry, but I find this intellectual masturbation.
Je moet het vanuit de praktijk bekijken.
You have to look at it from practice.
I wouldn't put it that way. I think you have to place it in a sociological, a scientific framework.
What he is making here is: you have to look at it from the point of view of the young people themselves.
Voor mij is het onzin.
To me it is nonsense.
Vanuit de jongeren zelf bekijken.
Look at it from the young people themselves.
Maar aan de andere kant:
But on the other hand:
But on the other side, you have to see it in a complex of problems. You can't extract one problem.
As usual the discussion is flaring up enormously. That was Denken, denken, denken for tonight. Until next time.
