On his return from his first expedition, Yves de Kerguelen is welcomed as a hero and received with full honours at the court of King Louis XV. He is quickly trapped by the enthusiasm his discovery arouses. Not daring to deny it, he will end up convincing himself of his own fantasies.
Versailles, juillet 1772.
Versailles, July 1772. I proposed to His Majesty that this third world be called Australasia. If one considers the latitude of these lands, one cannot help attributing to them the mildest and happiest climate, as well as the greatest fertility. Everything the eye could make out is interspersed with woods and greenery, which seems to announce a country inhabited and cultivated with care.
